Oh mein Gott, nicht schon wieder! Ich habe mich in einen Song verliebt. 🙂

Supernatural Superserious

Beim Her­auskra­men der alten R.E.M.-Unplugged-Aufnahmen von 1991 fiel mir wieder auf, wie großar­tig diese Band ein­mal war. Wie habe ich R.E.M. geliebt, damals. Großar­tige Alben hat die Band veröf­fentlicht: Mur­mur, Doc­u­ment, Auto­mat­ic for the Peo­ple, New Adven­tures in Hi-Fi. Irgend­wann kamen dann die musikalisch belan­glosen Reveal und Around the Sun und jet­zt also die erste Sin­gle „Super­nat­ur­al Super­se­ri­ous“ vom kom­menden Album Accel­er­ate.

Was ich da höre, hat lei­der lei­der lei­der nix mit der Größe ver­gan­gener Tage zu tun, ich höre nur einen müden Abklatsch von „Imi­ta­tion of Life“, gepaart mit ein paar auf Rock getrimmten E‑Gitarren. Belan­g­los, ein­fall­s­los, For­ma­tra­dio-kom­pat­i­bel. Was ist mit Michael Stipes Tex­ten passiert? Wo ist die ehe­mals so meta­phern­re­iche Lyrik? Muß man mit inzwis­chen 48 Jahren noch von der „Teenage Sta­tion“ und „you cry, you cry, you cry“ schwafeln?

HALT! Hier breche ich ab, um mich nicht kom­plett im waswar­dochfrüher­alles­bess­er-Brei zu suhlen, und mir ein Hin­tertürchen offen­zuhal­ten. 😀 Für das kom­mende Album, falls es wider Erwarten doch großar­tig aus­fall­en sollte.

Ich bleibe gespannt.

Arcade Fire in Paris

Abt. ‚Inno­va­tion‘ und so: Die Con­certs A Emporter des franzö­sis­chen Video-Blogs Le Blo­gothèque haben mit­tler­weile schon Kult-Sta­tus und es sind nicht nur kleine und unbekan­nte Szene-Bands, die ihre kurzen Unplugged-Sets an ungewöhn­lichen Orten in Paris spie­len. Da gibt es Auf­nah­men der Cold War Kids im Schul­bus, Neil Hastead von Mojave 3 im Fen­ster eines pit­toresk-franzö­sis­chen Alt­baus, The Divine Com­e­dy an ein­er Straße­necke und The Hid­den Cam­eras am Canal Saint Mar­tin. Es ist schön, diese Videos zu sehen, unab­hängig von den immer tollen Neu-Inter­pre­ta­tio­nen und Umdich­tun­gen, sie zeigen vor allem, dass die Indie-Szene tat­säch­lich noch zu funk­tion­ieren scheint, egal, wie oft ihr Tod angesichts kom­merziellen Erfol­gs noch her­beigere­det wird. So ist es beson­ders schön, dass eines der beein­druck­end­sten Doku­mente der Rei­he nun aus­gerech­net Arcade Fire zeigt. Da steckt die kom­plette Band, inklu­sive Bläsern und vie­len Stre­ich­ern, also in dur­chaus mon­u­men­taler Beset­zung, eng gepresst im Aufzug des Paris­er Clubs Olympia und spielt eine wun­der­schöne Ver­sion vom neuen Track Neon Bible, bevor sich schließlich die Türen öff­nen und eine über­wältigte Men­schen­menge im Foy­er den Klas­sik­er Wake Up feiert. Atmo­sphärisch unglaublich dicht und lei­den­schaftlich einge­fan­gen hat das Ereig­nis Vin­cent Moon. Großar­tiges Doku­ment ein­er großen, ein­er ganz großen Band.

Ben Lee vs. Against Me!

Der aus­tralis­che Song­writer Ben Lee hat der amerikanis­chen Punkband Against Me! einen feinen Dienst erwiesen: Er hat deren Songs gecovert. Nicht einen, nicht zwei, nicht drei, nein, gle­ich ein ganzes Album. Und zwar das großar­tige „New Wave“ aus dem let­zten Jahr. Die Songs gibt es für lau zum Down­load. Prädikat: abso­lut hörenswert.

folder.jpg WHY I COVERED THE ENTIRE „AGAINST ME!“ ALBUM „NEW WAVE“ A cou­ple of weeks ago I down­loaded the new „Against Me!“ album „New Wave“. I did­nt real­ly know too much about this band but had been read­ing lots of good things about it, and my friend Tegan sings on it. I like to keep myself up to date with whats going on musi­cal­ly in the world, so I checked it out. I fell in love with the album. Real­ly. Like, could­n’t stop lis­ten­ing to it. As heavy and gnarly as it sounds at times, it is unmis­tak­ably a pop mas­ter­piece. Lis­ten­ing to it on the way to Aus­tralia, I won­dered to myself how these songs would sound acousti­cal­ly. A cou­ple of days lat­er I was on a flight from Syd­ney to Mel­bourne and had the thought „I’d love to cov­er this album.“ The whole thing. Begin­ning to end. So I did. Any­way, here are the results. If you already know the orig­i­nal album, I hope these record­ings shed a dif­fer­ent light on it. If you don’t know „Against Me!“ and like what you hear, go check them out. Nic Johns is the unspo­ken hero of this tale. He record­ed, pro­duced and mixed it and basi­cal­ly made my dream a real­i­ty. Hats off to him. Hope you guys dig it. Enjoy. Ben
